GEO and AEO in 2026: How to Get Your Business Cited by ChatGPT and AI Overviews
Traditional search volume is falling while AI answers take over. Here is how Indian businesses get named inside ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews.

Something has quietly changed about how your customers find you. A prospect who would have typed "best CRM for small business India" into Google in 2023 now asks ChatGPT the same thing and reads a paragraph naming three companies. If you are not one of the three, you never existed in that conversation — and there is no impression, no click and no line in your analytics telling you it happened.
That is the problem Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) and Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) exist to solve. This guide explains what they actually involve, in practical terms, for Indian businesses.
What GEO and AEO Actually Mean
<strong>AEO</strong> is about being the direct answer to a specific question — in Google AI Overviews, featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, and voice assistants. <strong>GEO</strong> is broader: making sure large language models such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity understand what your brand is, what it is credible at, and mention it when someone asks for a recommendation in your category.
The two overlap heavily and neither replaces SEO. The uncomfortable truth is that they add a layer of work on top of it. Gartner forecast a roughly 25% drop in traditional search engine volume by 2026, and that forecast has broadly landed. Total search activity has not fallen — it has moved.
Why This Matters More Than the Traffic Numbers Suggest
- AI-referred visitors arrive far later in the buying process. They have already been given a shortlist and are checking you out, not beginning research.
- A citation inside an AI answer functions as a third-party recommendation, not an advertisement. The trust transfer is significant.
- Category shortlists are sticky. Once a model consistently associates your brand with "affordable ERP for Indian manufacturers", that position is hard for a competitor to dislodge.
- Almost nobody in the Indian market is working on this yet. The window is open and it will not stay open.
The Six Things That Actually Move AI Visibility
1. Answer the question in the first fifty words
Language models extract passages, not pages. If your article on "how long does SEO take in India" opens with three paragraphs of throat-clearing about the importance of digital presence, there is nothing clean to lift. Lead with a direct, complete, self-contained answer. Then elaborate.
2. Structure content so it can be parsed
- Use question-shaped H2s and H3s that match how people actually phrase things
- Keep answer paragraphs to 40–80 words — long enough to be complete, short enough to quote
- Use tables and lists for comparisons; models reproduce them almost verbatim
- Put a clear summary near the top rather than saving conclusions for the end
3. Publish specific, checkable facts
Generic advice is invisible. "Optimise your website for better results" appears in ten thousand articles and gets cited from none of them. "Indian D2C brands typically see cost per acquisition rise 30–40% between Q2 and the festive quarter" is specific, attributable and quotable. Original data, real benchmarks and named examples are the raw material AI systems reward.
4. Get mentioned in places models already read
This is where GEO stops being a content exercise. Models draw heavily on Reddit, Quora, YouTube transcripts, review platforms, industry publications and Wikipedia-adjacent reference sources. A brand mentioned across twenty credible third-party pages gets recommended. A brand that only talks about itself on its own domain does not.
- Earn listings on relevant comparison and directory sites in your category
- Build a genuine presence in the subreddits and forums where your buyers ask questions
- Get quoted in trade publications — HR tech, real estate, healthcare, whatever your sector reads
- Maintain accurate, consistent business information everywhere it appears
5. Implement structured data properly
Schema markup is how you tell machines what your content <em>is</em> rather than making them infer it. Organization, Article, FAQPage, Product, Service and LocalBusiness schema all help. Validate everything through Google's Rich Results Test and keep your schema.org types accurate rather than aspirational.
6. Do not block the crawlers you want
A surprising number of Indian sites have robots.txt rules or Cloudflare bot rules that block GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended. If you want to appear in AI answers, those crawlers need access. Check this before doing anything else — it is a five-minute fix that occasionally explains everything.
How to Measure Something With No Impressions Report
- <strong>Prompt tracking.</strong> Run a fixed set of 20–40 buyer questions monthly across each model and log whether you are mentioned. Tedious, but it is the only honest baseline.
- <strong>Referral traffic segmentation.</strong> In Google Analytics, build a segment for chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com referrals. Small numbers, high conversion rates.
- <strong>Branded search volume.</strong> When AI recommends you, people then Google your name. Rising branded impressions in Search Console is a reliable proxy signal.
- <strong>Sales conversations.</strong> Add "how did you hear about us" to your enquiry form. "ChatGPT suggested you" is now a genuine answer we see weekly.
What Has Not Changed
None of this replaces the fundamentals. AI systems draw their answers from indexed web content, so technical health, crawlability, page speed and topical authority still underpin everything. Good SEO is the foundation GEO is built on, not an alternative to it. If your site is slow, thin and unlinked, no amount of schema markup will get you into an AI answer.
Where to Start
Run the visibility test above, unblock the AI crawlers, then rewrite your five most commercially important pages to answer their core question in the opening lines. That sequence gets most businesses further than a six-month project plan would. When you want a structured version of this built into your existing search programme, our strategy team maps it against your category — or tell us what you sell and we will run the prompt audit for you.
