Google Business Profile Optimisation: A Field Checklist

A field-by-field checklist for optimising your Google Business Profile, what actually affects map pack ranking, and the mistakes that suppress listings.

For a business with a physical location or a service area, the Google Business Profile often outperforms the website for local enquiries. It appears above organic results, carries the phone number and directions, and is free. Most profiles are still filled in to about half their capacity.

This is a field-by-field checklist of what to complete, ordered by what actually affects visibility.

What influences map pack ranking

Google describes local ranking as a combination of relevance, distance and prominence. In practice that resolves into a short list, and knowing which items you can move matters more than the list itself.

Why your ranking "changes" Clients often report that they rank first from the office and third from home. Both are true. Proximity is a ranking factor, so there is no single position for a local query — only a position relative to where the searcher is standing.

The field checklist

Work top to bottom. The first three matter more than the rest combined.

 • Primary category. Pick the most specific option that describes what you actually are. "Dental clinic" beats "clinic". This single field shapes which searches you are eligible for.
 • Secondary categories. Add genuine additional services, not aspirational ones. Irrelevant categories dilute rather than extend reach.
 • Business name. Your real-world name exactly as it appears on signage. Adding keywords is a guidelines violation and a common cause of suspension.
 • Address and service area. A precise address if customers visit, a service area if you travel to them. Not both for the same operation.
 • Hours, including special hours. Set festival and holiday hours in advance. Nothing earns a one-star review faster than a wasted journey.
 • Phone number. A local number where possible, matching the one on your website.
 • Website link. Point to the most relevant page, not always the homepage. A clinic with one location should link to that location page.
 • Services and products. Enumerated individually with descriptions. Almost universally left blank, and it is free relevance.
 • Attributes. Wheelchair access, parking, payment methods, languages spoken. These surface as filters in search.
 • Description. 750 characters describing what you do and for whom. Not a keyword list.
 • Photos. Exterior, interior, team, and what you actually sell. Real photographs, updated periodically.
 • Q&A. You can ask and answer questions yourself. Seed the ones customers actually ask before someone else answers wrongly.

Reviews: the part that compounds

Review count, rating and recency all contribute, and recency is the one most businesses neglect. Forty reviews with the newest from two years ago reads worse to a customer than twelve with three from last month.

The mechanism that works is asking everyone, at the moment the service was delivered, with a direct link that removes friction — our review link generator creates that link free. Respond to every review, positive and negative. For what you can and cannot get removed, our guide on handling bad Google reviews covers the policy grounds, and reputation management covers running it as a process.

Never buy reviews Purchased reviews are detectable, breach Google's policies, and risk the whole profile. A suspended listing costs far more than slow honest review growth, and recovering one is a slow process with no guaranteed outcome.

Posts, products and the activity signal

Profile posts expire after about a week unless they are event or offer types, and their direct ranking effect is modest. They are still worth doing for two reasons: they occupy space in your listing that would otherwise be empty, and they demonstrate the business is active. A weekly post takes a few minutes. Treat it as upkeep rather than as a growth lever.

Mistakes that actively suppress a profile

 • Keyword stuffing the business name. The most common guidelines breach, and competitors can report it.
 • Duplicate listings. Two profiles for one location split your signals. Find and merge them.
 • Inconsistent NAP. Different phone numbers or address formats across directories weaken the entity Google is trying to confirm.
 • A virtual office address. Listing an address where nobody is present breaches guidelines and is a frequent suspension cause.
 • Abandoned Q&A. Anyone can answer a question about your business. If you are not watching, somebody else defines you.
 • Unanswered reviews. Visible to every prospect, and a signal you are not paying attention.

Where to start

Open your profile and count the blank fields. For most businesses that exercise alone finds an hour of work worth more than anything else available for free. Once completeness and categories are right, review flow becomes the lever that keeps working — and if you would rather have that run as a process than remember it each week, that is what our local SEO work covers.
