Instagram Monetization in India (2026): Every Way to Earn

Which Instagram monetization tools work in India, their eligibility rules, how payouts and Gifts work, plus the tax and ASCI rules Indian creators must follow.

Published 17 October 2026 by Web Hippo in Social Media

Instagram monetization in India works differently from what many global guides describe. Some tools, such as Gifts and Subscriptions, are available here. Others, including Live Badges and most bonus programmes, are not. The biggest source of income for most Indian creators isn't a built-in Instagram feature at all: it is brand partnerships.

This guide covers each earning option available to Indian accounts in 2026, the eligibility rules, how payouts work, and the tax and ASCI disclosure rules you need to follow once money starts coming in.

Instagram Monetization Tools Available in India

All built-in tools require you to be 18 or older, use a professional (creator or business) account, and follow Meta's Partner Monetization Policies and Content Monetization Policies. Artificially boosting followers or engagement can cost you eligibility.

Gifts: The Easiest Tool to Unlock

With 500 followers you can turn on Gifts, and viewers can send animated gifts on your Reels using Stars they buy. You earn <strong>USD 0.01 per Star</strong>. Meta keeps its share when viewers buy Stars, so what the viewer pays is more than what you receive.

Worked example: if your Reels collect 20,000 Stars in a month, that is USD 200, or somewhere around ₹17,000–18,000 depending on the exchange rate, before tax. Most creators earn far less than that. Treat Gifts as a signal of fan loyalty and a small bonus, not a salary.

Subscriptions: For Creators With a Loyal Core

At 10,000 followers you can offer Subscriptions: a monthly fee in exchange for subscriber-only Stories, Reels, Lives, broadcast channels and a badge next to the subscriber's name. It works best when you can promise something specific and recurring, such as a weekly stock-market breakdown, a monthly workout plan, or behind-the-scenes cooking lessons. "Exclusive content" with no clear promise rarely converts.

Brand Deals: Where Most Income Comes From

Paid collaborations with brands are the main income for most Indian creators. You can find them three ways: brands approaching you directly, influencer agencies and platforms, and Instagram's Creator Marketplace, which launched in India in February 2024 and lets brands search for creators by niche and audience.

When a brand pays you, tag the post using Instagram's <strong>Paid partnership</strong> label. Brands can then run your post as a Partnership ad, which is often part of the deal, so agree up front how long they can use it and whether that costs extra.

What brands actually pay for Rates depend far more on audience fit and engagement than on follower count. A 15,000-follower Hyderabad food creator whose audience actually visits restaurants can be worth more to a local restaurant than a 300,000-follower general meme page. Bring a short media kit: audience city and age split, average Reel reach, saves and shares, and two or three past results.

Affiliate Links in Reels (New in 2026)

In early 2026 Instagram began letting creators tag products in Reels and earn commission on purchases, with India among the first markets. This brings back native affiliate earning years after Instagram shut its earlier affiliate programme in 2022. If you see the option in your professional dashboard, it suits product-led niches such as beauty, fashion, tech and home.

How Payouts Work

  • <strong>Set up a payout account</strong> in your professional dashboard with your legal name (matching your tax ID), address, tax ID and bank details.
  • <strong>Minimum balance:</strong> for accounts outside the US, USD 100 for wire transfers or USD 25 for other methods. Below that, earnings roll over to the next month.
  • <strong>Timing:</strong> payments for Gifts and Subscriptions arrive around the 21st of the month for the previous month's earnings.
  • <strong>Brand deals</strong> are paid by the brand or agency directly, under your own invoice and payment terms.

Check your monetization status

In the Instagram mobile app, go to Settings → Creator tools and controls (or Business tools and controls) → <strong>Monetisation status</strong>. It shows which tools you are eligible for and any policy violations, and lets you request a review. Check it before assuming a feature "isn't showing up" because of a bug.

Tax and Disclosure Rules for Indian Creators

Not tax advice This section summarises published rules. Speak to a chartered accountant about your own situation, especially GST on payments from foreign companies such as Meta.
  • <strong>Income tax:</strong> Instagram and brand income is taxable as business or professional income. From AY 2025-26 the ITR forms include a dedicated code for social media influencers (16021).
  • <strong>Free products count:</strong> brands must deduct 10% TDS on benefits such as products you keep if they exceed ₹20,000 in a year. Under CBDT Circular 12/2022, products you return after the shoot are not treated as a benefit. The rule was Section 194R; from 1 April 2026 it sits in Section 393(1) of the Income-tax Act, 2025.
  • <strong>GST:</strong> registration is mandatory once your service turnover crosses ₹20 lakh a year (₹10 lakh in some special-category states).
  • <strong>ASCI disclosure:</strong> paid or gifted content must carry an upfront label. ASCI allows #Ad, #Advertisement, #Sponsored, #Collaboration, #Partnership, #Employee and #Free gift. #collab on its own is not on the list. In videos the label must stay on screen long enough to read. See ASCI's FAQs.
  • <strong>Health and finance creators</strong> need qualifications: investment advice requires SEBI registration shown upfront, and health claims require a relevant medical or allied qualification under ASCI's 2023 guidelines.
