YouTube Banner Size and Thumbnail Size: 2026 Guide
Current YouTube banner, thumbnail, profile picture and watermark sizes from YouTube's own specs, plus the safe area that shows on every device.
Published by Web Hippo in Social Media
The YouTube banner size is 2560 × 1440 pixels, and the thumbnail size is any 16:9 image at least 640 pixels wide, with 1280 × 720 the practical standard. Both specs have shifted recently. The banner safe area that most guides still quote (1546 × 423) is not what YouTube's help centre lists today, and thumbnails can now be uploaded at 4K.
Below are the current numbers from YouTube's own channel branding and thumbnail help pages, plus a layout method that keeps your banner readable on a phone as well as a TV.

YouTube Banner Size and the Safe Area
One banner file has to work on a TV, a laptop and a phone, and each shows a different slice of it. TVs display the full 2560 × 1440 image. Desktops and phones show a wide, shallow strip from the middle, and the narrowest view is what YouTube calls the safe area: 1235 × 338 pixels in the centre.
Anything outside that box, including your logo, tagline, upload schedule or website, will be cut off for most viewers. The area around it should be background: colour, texture or imagery that still looks right when it is cropped.
A layout that works everywhere
- Create a 2560 × 1440 canvas.
- Draw a guide box of 1235 × 338 in the exact centre. It starts about 662 px from the left edge and 551 px from the top.
- Put the channel name, a one-line promise ("Weekly home-loan tips in Telugu") and at most one other element inside the box.
- Fill the rest with background that extends naturally. Avoid faces or text near the edges.
- Export as JPG or PNG under 6 MB, then preview on desktop and on a phone before saving.
YouTube Thumbnail Size
YouTube's requirements are a 16:9 image, at least 640 pixels wide, in JPG or PNG. 1280 × 720 has been the standard for years and is still a safe choice. YouTube now also accepts thumbnails up to 3840 × 2160, which look sharper on large TVs. Files can be up to 2 MB when uploading from the mobile app and up to 50 MB from YouTube Studio on desktop.
You need a verified account to upload custom thumbnails. Verification takes a phone number and a few minutes in YouTube Studio. Until it is done you can only choose one of the auto-generated frames.
Shorts thumbnails
Shorts are vertical, so their thumbnails are 9:16, such as 1080 × 1920. YouTube also notes that when a vertical video has a 16:9 thumbnail, it may generate a 4:5 version for Home, Explore and Subscriptions. The simplest approach is to keep the subject and any text in the centre of the frame.
Thumbnail Design That Earns the Click
Size makes the thumbnail display correctly. Design decides whether anyone clicks. Thumbnails are viewed at a fraction of their real size, often around 250 pixels wide on a phone, so a design full of detail becomes noise.
- One subject, clearly visible. A face showing a real expression, the product, or a single striking result.
- Three to five words at most, in a heavy font, and not simply repeating the title.
- Strong contrast against YouTube's white and dark themes. Check both.
- Keep the bottom-right corner clear. The video length label sits there.
- Consistency across videos, so returning viewers recognise your channel in their feed.
YouTube Studio's Test & Compare feature lets eligible channels upload up to three thumbnails for one video and see which one gets more watch time. If you have access, it is the most reliable way to settle design arguments.
Profile Picture and Watermark
YouTube shows your profile picture as a circle at roughly 98 × 98 pixels, and much smaller next to comments. Upload a square image of 800 × 800 so it stays sharp, and use a simple logo mark rather than a full wordmark.
The video watermark is a small square image, at least 150 × 150 and under 1 MB, that appears in the corner of your videos. On desktop, clicking it lets viewers subscribe. A transparent PNG of your logo works best. You can show it for the whole video, the last 15 seconds, or from a custom start time.
Common Mistakes
- Using an old template with the 1546 × 423 safe area. It is larger than the current safe area, so text near its edges may be cropped on some screens.
- Putting the upload schedule or website at the banner edges. Most viewers never see it.
- Unreadable thumbnails. Designing at full size and never checking at phone size.
- Misleading thumbnails. Viewers leave quickly when the video does not match the promise, and YouTube notices that the video fails to hold attention.
