ChatGPT Ads in India: Should Your Brand Advertise?
ChatGPT ads launched in India in August 2026. How they work, who sees them, what they cost, the rules, and a low-risk way to test them.

Should your brand advertise on ChatGPT? If your customers research before they buy, and you can measure what happens after the click, it is worth a small, disciplined test. It is not yet worth moving serious budget away from Google or Meta. OpenAI announced ChatGPT ads for India on 27 August 2026, and self-serve buying opened in early September. The platform is new, results data is thin, and the formats are still changing month to month.
This guide explains how ChatGPT ads work, who sees them, what they cost, what you can't advertise, and a 30-day test plan that limits the downside.
What ChatGPT Ads Are
ChatGPT ads appear below ChatGPT's answer, labelled "Sponsored" and visually separate from it. If someone asks for help planning a Goa trip and a hotel chain is advertising, the itinerary comes first and a sponsored hotel card may appear underneath. OpenAI states that ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives. The answer and the ad are produced separately.
Who Sees ChatGPT Ads
- Free and Go users only. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education plans are ad-free. Go is the low-cost plan that launched in India in August 2025.
- Adults only. OpenAI says ads are not shown to users under 18, including users it predicts are under 18.
- Not near sensitive topics. Ads are excluded from conversations about health, mental health and politics, and political ads are not allowed.
The audience is large. OpenAI says ChatGPT has more than a billion weekly users globally, and in February 2026 Sam Altman said India had over 100 million weekly users, its second-largest market. But the paying professionals who might be your best B2B buyers are often on Plus or Business plans, where no ads appear.
How Buying Works
Indian advertisers can buy through OpenAI's self-serve Ads Manager, through OpenAI's sales team for larger budgets, or through agency partners. WPP and Omnicom were named for the India launch, which started with about 50 brands on a managed basis. Every advertiser has to be verified before launching.
Advertisers target by what a conversation is about, not by keywords the way Google Search works. You describe your offer and audience, and OpenAI's system decides which conversations are relevant. Advertisers don't get access to chats, names or contact details. OpenAI says conversations stay private and data is not sold.
Does It Work? What the Early Evidence Says
OpenAI says ChatGPT ads passed a $1 billion annualised revenue run rate in under 200 days, with tens of thousands of advertisers. That shows adoption. It doesn't show performance. Independent evidence so far is mixed: some reports have put click-through rates well below Google Search, and agencies have said proof of business results is limited. There is no published India performance data yet.
Our view: the most promising use is high-consideration purchases where people ask for comparisons and recommendations. Think "best laptop under ₹60,000 for video editing", "3-day Kerala itinerary with kids", or "which CRM suits a 10-person sales team". Someone who has just been given a considered answer and sees a relevant offer underneath is further along than someone scrolling a feed. Whether that shows up in your numbers is exactly what a test is for.
ChatGPT Ads vs Google's AI Overview Ads
Google already runs ads in AI Overviews in India (English, mobile and desktop) through existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns, with no new platform to learn. Perplexity, meanwhile, stopped selling ads in early 2026.
A 30-Day Test Plan
- Pick one offer that people research before buying, with a landing page that already converts well from Google.
- Set a fixed budget, say ₹1,000–₹1,500 a day for 30 days (about ₹30,000–₹45,000). That is enough to learn from without risking a quarter's plan.
- Install conversion tracking first, using OpenAI's pixel or Conversions API plus UTM-tagged URLs, so results also show up in GA4.
- Start with CPC bidding so you pay for visits rather than impressions while you learn.
- Compare cost per qualified lead or sale against your Google Search and Meta numbers for the same offer, not clicks or CTR.
- Decide in advance: if cost per result is within about 1.5× your Google Search figure after 30 days, keep testing. If not, pause and revisit in a quarter as the platform matures.

Being recommended in the answer itself is still worth more than a sponsored card under it, and it costs nothing per click. Make sure OpenAI's search crawler (OAI-SearchBot) can reach your site, publish specific, useful content that answers buyer questions, and earn mentions on the review sites and forums ChatGPT draws from. Our GEO and AEO guide covers this in detail.
