Google Ads Interview Questions (2026): 25 Answers by Level

25 Google Ads interview questions with model answers for freshers, PPC executives and senior roles, plus Meta Ads questions and practical tests agencies set.

Published 14 June 2026 by Web Hippo in Paid Ads

Most lists of Google Ads interview questions online are years out of date. They still describe modified broad match, expanded text ads, average position and first-click attribution, all of which Google has retired. Repeat those answers and you signal that you learned PPC from old blog posts, not from the platform.

This guide has 25 questions grouped by level: fresher, PPC executive (2 to 4 years) and senior performance marketer, plus three Meta Ads questions most Indian agencies now add. Each model answer is checked against Google Ads Help and notes what the interviewer is really testing, followed by practical tasks with worked answers.

How Google Ads Interviews Work at Indian Agencies

The pattern is similar to SEO hiring, which we covered in our SEO interview questions guide: a concept round, a practical task and a conversation about accounts you have managed. In our experience the practical task decides most offers: plenty of candidates can define Quality Score, but fewer can open a search terms report and say which spend was wasted.

Expect Meta Ads questions too, since most Indian performance marketing roles cover both platforms.

Google Ads Interview Questions for Freshers

Fresher rounds check that you understand the auction and the basic metrics. Nobody expects big-budget experience.

1. How does the Google Ads auction decide which ads show?

Every search triggers an auction, and ads are ordered by Ad Rank. Google's Ad Rank documentation lists its inputs: your bid, ad and landing page quality, Ad Rank thresholds, the competitiveness of the auction, the context of the search and the expected impact of assets. What they're checking: that you know the highest bid does not automatically win.

2. What is Quality Score, and does it affect the auction?

Quality Score is a 1 to 10 rating at keyword level, built from expected click-through rate, ad relevance and landing page experience. The trap: Google says Quality Score is not an input in the ad auction. It is a diagnostic; real-time quality signals feed Ad Rank, not the number you see. What they're checking: whether you treat it as a KPI to chase. You shouldn't.

3. Explain the keyword match types.

Broad match (no symbols) shows ads on searches related to the keyword. Phrase match ("keyword") covers searches that include its meaning. Exact match ([keyword]) covers searches with the same meaning or intent. Broad match modifier was merged into phrase match in 2021. What they're checking: that you don't describe exact match as "that exact word order only".

4. What are negative keywords?

Terms that stop your ad showing on searches you don't want. A physiotherapy clinic would add "course", "jobs" and "salary" so it doesn't pay for clicks from students and job seekers. Our guide to negative keywords in Google Ads covers the full process. What they're checking: that you know negatives come from reading the search terms report, not from guessing.

5. Define CTR, CPC, CPA, conversion rate and ROAS.

 • CTR (click-through rate) = clicks ÷ impressions.
 • CPC (cost per click) = cost ÷ clicks.
 • Conversion rate = conversions ÷ clicks (or interactions).
 • CPA (cost per acquisition) = cost ÷ conversions.
 • ROAS (return on ad spend) = conversion value ÷ cost. ₹4 of revenue per ₹1 spent is a ROAS of 4, or 400%.

For a refresher, see our explainer on CPC, CPM and CTR full forms. What they're checking: that you can calculate these in your head, which Task 1 below tests.

6. Which campaign types does Google Ads offer?

Search, Performance Max, Demand Gen, Shopping, Video, App and Display. To show you are current, mention that Demand Gen runs visual ads across YouTube, Discover, Gmail, Maps and the Display Network, and that Google is moving Display into Demand Gen: from June 2026 eligible advertisers can migrate Display campaigns, with automatic migration to follow. What they're checking: that you match a campaign type to a goal instead of listing names.

7. What is a responsive search ad?

The standard Search ad format. You supply up to 15 headlines (30 characters each) and up to 4 descriptions (90 characters each), and Google tests combinations for each search. We cover writing them in our responsive search ads guide. What they're checking: that you know pinning limits the combinations Google can test.

8. What are assets?

What Google used to call ad extensions: sitelinks, callouts, structured snippets, call, location, lead form, image and price assets, among others. Their expected impact is part of Ad Rank. What they're checking: that you would add a call asset for a clinic whose customers prefer to phone.

PPC Interview Questions for 2 to 4 Years' Experience

At executive level the questions move from "what is" to "what would you do". Expect follow-ups on every answer.

9. Manual CPC or Smart Bidding: how do you choose?

Smart Bidding (Maximise conversions, Target CPA, Maximise conversion value, Target ROAS) sets a bid for every auction using signals such as device, location and time, but it needs reliable conversion tracking and enough volume to learn. Manual CPC still suits a new account with no conversion data. What they're checking: that you link the bidding choice to data quality, not personal preference.

10. Is broad match safe to use?

With Smart Bidding and good conversion data, yes. Google's match type guidance says it is critical to pair broad match with Smart Bidding, because each query gets its own bid. With Manual CPC and no negatives, broad match is how accounts waste money. What they're checking: a conditional answer, not "broad match is bad" or "always use broad".

11. How do you set up conversion tracking?

Install the Google tag (directly or through Google Tag Manager), create conversion actions for the events that matter (purchases, form submissions, calls) and mark only real business outcomes as primary. Importing GA4 key events is an option, but it can report differently from native tags. Test with a live conversion. What they're checking: that you don't count page views or button clicks as primary conversions, a mistake we see in many accounts we audit.

12. What are enhanced conversions?

A feature that sends hashed first-party data (email, phone, name or address) captured on your conversion page to Google, hashed with SHA256, so more conversions can be matched to ad clicks. Enhanced conversions for web improve online measurement; enhanced conversions for leads link offline sales back to the original lead. What they're checking: that you understand the data is hashed, and why accuracy matters for Smart Bidding.

13. What is Consent Mode v2?

Consent Mode passes a visitor's cookie consent choice to Google tags. Version 2 added two parameters, ad_user_data and ad_personalization, alongside ad_storage and analytics_storage, and they are required for EEA traffic. In basic mode tags wait for consent; in advanced mode they send cookieless pings when consent is denied. What they're checking: privacy awareness. In India, expect a follow-up on consent under the DPDP Act.

14. Which attribution models can you use in Google Ads?

Two: data-driven and last click. Google's attribution documentation confirms first click, linear, time decay and position-based are no longer supported, and actions that used them were upgraded to data-driven, which is the default for most conversion actions. What they're checking: this is the fastest way to spot a candidate reading from a 2021 question bank.

15. CPA rose 40% this month. How do you investigate?

First rule out tracking breaks, site changes and conversion lag. Then split the change: did CPC rise (competition, bid strategy) or did conversion rate fall (landing page, offer, seasonality)? Segment by campaign, device, location and search term to find where. What they're checking: a calm, ordered process, and knowing that CPA = CPC ÷ conversion rate.

16. How do you improve lead quality, not just lead volume?

Send the sales outcome back to Google: import offline conversions (qualified lead, site visit, sale) from the CRM, matched with enhanced conversions for leads, and bid on the qualified stage. In the ad, state price ranges so the wrong people self-select out. What they're checking: that you know a cheap form fill from a Kondapur real estate campaign is worthless if nobody answers the phone.

17. How often should you make changes to a Smart Bidding campaign?

Less often than most people do. Large changes to budget, targets or conversion actions can send the strategy back into a learning period. Judge a full conversion cycle before changing targets, then move them in modest steps. What they're checking: patience, and whether you over-manage automated campaigns.

Performance Marketing Interview Questions for Senior Roles

Senior rounds test judgment about structure, measurement and budget. If Performance Max is central to the role, read our Performance Max guide first.

18. When would you use Performance Max instead of Search?

PMax runs one goal-based campaign across all Google channels. It suits e-commerce with a good product feed and accounts with solid conversion data. We keep Search alongside it for core terms, and use brand exclusions so PMax does not claim brand searches that would convert anyway. What they're checking: that you know an exact match Search keyword matching the query takes priority over PMax.

19. What is AI Max for Search campaigns?

A set of features you switch on inside a Search campaign, not a separate campaign type. According to Google Ads Help, it adds search term matching beyond your keywords, text customisation of headlines and descriptions, and final URL expansion to pick the most relevant page. What they're checking: that you would test it as an experiment and watch the search terms and landing pages it chooses.

20. How would you structure an account for a business in five cities?

Consolidate where data would otherwise be thin, split where budget, margins or goals genuinely differ. Five near-identical city campaigns at ₹500 a day each starve Smart Bidding of data; one campaign with location-specific ad groups usually learns faster. What they're checking: that you know over-segmentation is the most common structural mistake today.

21. How do you prove Google Ads is driving incremental sales?

Platform-reported conversions include some people who would have bought anyway. Use campaign experiments, geo holdouts (pause in comparable cities and compare) and blended metrics such as total revenue ÷ total marketing spend. What they're checking: scepticism about platform numbers, and budget decisions based on the business, not the dashboard.

22. How do you set a target ROAS?

From margins, not from what a competitor claims. Break-even ROAS = 1 ÷ gross margin: a 40% margin means ROAS must be above 2.5 before the ads make money. Then allow for returns and repeat purchases. For a Pune D2C brand with high repeat rates, a lower first-order ROAS can be fine. What they're checking: commercial thinking, which separates a senior hire from an executive.

Facebook Ads Interview Questions to Expect

These come up in most Indian performance marketing interviews, even for "Google Ads" roles.

23. What is the learning phase on Meta?

The period when Meta's delivery system explores how to show an ad set. It usually exits after around 50 optimisation events within a week of the last significant edit, and big edits can restart it. What they're checking: that you size budgets so each ad set can exit learning.

24. What is Advantage+?

Meta's name for its automation features: Advantage+ audience, placements and creative, and Advantage+ campaign setups that automate targeting, placements and budget allocation together. Broad targeting with varied creative now usually beats narrow interest stacks. What they're checking: that you understand creative now does much of the targeting work.

25. What is the Conversions API, and why use it?

The Conversions API (CAPI) sends events from your server or CRM directly to Meta, instead of relying only on the browser pixel, which browser privacy settings can block. Run both, deduplicated with a shared event ID, and send qualified-lead events from your CRM. What they're checking: measurement maturity, the Meta equivalent of enhanced conversions.

Practical PPC Tasks Interviewers Give (With Model Answers)

Expect at least one of these as a 30 to 60 minute exercise. The scenarios are illustrative but typical.

Task 1: Calculate the metrics

Brief: a campaign spent ₹1,20,000 (excluding GST), got 4,000 clicks, 96 purchases and ₹4,80,000 in revenue. The product margin is 40%. Is it profitable?

A strong answer adds context: ROAS of 4 against a break-even of 2.5 is profitable, so there is room to scale. Mentioning that 18% GST is paid on top of ad spend earns a nod in Indian interviews.

Task 2: Audit a mock account

Brief: a Madhapur physiotherapy clinic spends ₹60,000 a month on one Search campaign. Conversions look great, but the clinic says calls are few. You get 20 minutes in the account. What do you find and fix first?

Interviewers care most about the order: measurement first, because every other fix is judged against conversion data. Finish with your top three actions.

Task 3: Write a responsive search ad

Brief: write headlines and descriptions for the same clinic's back pain ad group. A model answer mixes the service, the location, proof and a call to action, with every line able to stand on its own:

 • Headlines (under 30 characters): Physiotherapy in Madhapur · Back & Neck Pain Treatment · Book a Physio Assessment · Sports Injury Rehab Plans · Open Mon to Sat, 7am to 9pm · Home Visits Across Hyderabad · Walk In or Book on WhatsApp
 • Description 1: One-to-one sessions with qualified physios. Book your first assessment online.
 • Description 2: Treatment plans for back pain, frozen shoulder and sports injuries near Madhapur.

Point out that you avoided unprovable claims like "best physio in Hyderabad", and would pin only a line that must always appear.

Common Mistakes Candidates Make

 • Quoting retired features: modified broad match, expanded text ads, average position, first-click or linear attribution.
 • Treating Quality Score as the goal instead of conversions and profit.
 • Claiming results without context. "I got a ₹50 CPL" means little without the lead-to-sale rate.
 • Knowing Google Ads but not tracking. Most real problems start with conversion setup.
