How to Learn Digital Marketing: A 90-Day Plan for India

How to learn digital marketing in India: free official courses, a 90-day plan with weekly outputs, and the portfolio projects agencies look for when hiring.

Published 22 September 2026 by Web Hippo in Strategy

If you want to know how to learn digital marketing without spending ₹50,000 on a course, the honest answer is this: the theory is free, and the part that makes you employable is practice on real accounts. Google, Meta and HubSpot all publish free training. What most learners skip is the hands-on work, such as running a small ad campaign, ranking a simple website or managing a local shop's Google listing.

We are a digital marketing agency in Hyderabad, and we interview juniors regularly. This guide is the learning path we would give a friend: what to learn first, which free resources are current in 2026, a 90-day plan with a concrete output every couple of weeks, and the portfolio projects that make us want to call someone back.

How to Learn Digital Marketing: The Short Answer

Learn in three layers. First, the fundamentals that every channel shares: how people search and buy, how a funnel works, what a conversion is and how to read basic analytics. Second, pick one channel and go deep, usually SEO, Google Ads, Meta ads or social media content. Third, practise on something real and write up what happened.

Most beginners do the opposite. They take a course that covers twelve topics in eight weeks, collect certificates and end up knowing a little about everything. Agencies and in-house teams hire for one skill they can put to work on day one. Breadth comes later, on the job.

What to learn first

 • Marketing basics: who the customer is, what problem they have, and why they would choose you. Our guide to the 7 digital marketing channels used in India shows how the pieces fit together.
 • Funnels and conversions: awareness, consideration and action, and what counts as a conversion (a form fill, a call, a WhatsApp chat, a purchase).
 • Analytics: enough Google Analytics 4 (GA4, Google's free website analytics tool) to answer "where did visitors come from and what did they do?"
 • Writing: clear headlines, ad copy and landing page text. Every channel depends on it.
 • Spreadsheets: sorting, filtering, pivot tables and simple formulas like cost per lead. You will use them every day.

Then choose one channel to go deep on

Free Digital Marketing Courses Worth Your Time

You do not need a paid course to learn the theory. These are the official, free resources we point juniors to. We checked each one in September 2026, because free course availability changes: Google's old Digital Garage platform, for example, was retired in 2025, and many Indian blogs still link to it.

Where to find them: Google's Fundamentals of Digital Marketing course on Skillshop replaced the Digital Garage version, with new content and a badge you can add to LinkedIn. Meta Blueprint describes its courses as free and self-paced; the proctored certification exams are booked separately and fees vary by exam and country, so check the price before you book. HubSpot Academy's certifications are free and online. For SEO, read Google's own SEO Starter Guide before any third-party course.

The one paid option on the list is Google's career certificate. The Grow with Google India page lists it at $20 a month on Coursera after a free 7-day trial, with most learners finishing in three to six months. It is well structured, but everything in it can be learned from the free resources above if you are disciplined.

Watch out for "free Google certificate" sellers Skillshop courses are free, and there was no fee for the Google Ads certification assessments when we checked in September 2026. If an institute or website asks you to pay for an "official Google certificate", you are paying for their coaching, not for Google's credential.

How to Start Digital Marketing With Real Projects

Courses teach you what the buttons do. Projects teach you what happens when you press them, which is what interviewers test. Here are three projects any learner in India can do on a small budget.

1. Run a ₹2,000 test campaign

Pick one goal, such as WhatsApp enquiries for a friend's home bakery in Kondapur, and run a small Meta or Google campaign over a week or two. ₹2,000 will not produce statistically clean results, and that is fine. The point is to set up tracking, write the ads, watch the numbers move and learn why most clicks don't convert.

Write up what you did: the objective, audience or keywords, ad copy, spend, clicks, cost per click, enquiries and what you would change next time. A candidate who can explain why their ₹2,000 test got a poor result is more useful to us than one with five certificates and no spend history.

2. Build and rank a small website

Build a 5 to 10 page site on a narrow topic you know well, say "weekend treks near Pune" or "Telugu board game reviews". Do the keyword research, write the pages yourself, connect Google Search Console and GA4, and track impressions for three months. Search Console is Google's free tool that shows which searches your pages appear for.

You probably won't rank for anything big. You will learn how indexing works, how long SEO takes and how to read Search Console, which covers a good share of what we ask in SEO interviews.

3. Manage a local business's Google Business Profile

Offer to manage the Google Business Profile of a local shop, clinic or salon for free for two months. Ask the owner to add you as a manager from their profile settings rather than sharing their password. Then fix the categories, hours and photos, post weekly updates, and reply to reviews with their approval.

Take screenshots of the profile's performance data before and after. Local SEO is one of the most common first jobs at Indian agencies, and real before-and-after numbers from a Kukatpally pharmacy or a Madhapur salon are far more convincing than a mock project.

A 90-Day Learning Plan With Weekly Outputs

This plan assumes 1 to 2 hours on weekdays and a longer session at weekends. Each block ends with something you can show, because an output is harder to fake than "I watched the videos".

If you are preparing for paid search roles, work through our Google Ads interview questions in weeks 12 and 13. Being able to answer them out loud, using examples from your own test campaign, is the best preparation we know of.

Portfolio Projects That Impress Hiring Managers

This is our view from the hiring side, not a rule every employer follows. When we screen junior applications, these are the things that make us want to talk to someone:

 • A real campaign with real spend, even a tiny one, with screenshots and an honest explanation of the results.
 • A site you built with Search Console data showing impressions growing over a few months.
 • A local business you helped, with before-and-after screenshots and a line from the owner.
 • An audit of a real business, such as a Pune D2C brand's website or Instagram, with five specific, prioritised fixes. Keep it polite; you may interview with them one day.
 • A social account you grew yourself, with a note on what content worked and what flopped.
 • A spreadsheet you built, such as a keyword map, a budget plan or a lead tracker, that shows you can work with data.

What does not impress us: a list of 15 certificates, a portfolio of Canva posts with no results, or case studies copied from a course. Two honest projects beat ten polished mock-ups.

Certifications vs Proof of Work

Certificates are useful as a filter. They show you finished something, and Google Ads certifications count towards an agency's Google Partner status, so some agencies ask new hires to get them. They are also free, so there is little reason not to.

But certification exams test whether you know the platform's features, not whether you can get results. In interviews we spend very little time on certificates and a lot of time on "walk me through a campaign you ran". If you have limited hours, put them into projects first and certificates second.

Is Digital Marketing a Good Career in India?

In our view, yes, for people who like both creative work and numbers and are comfortable with constant change. Almost every business in India now needs some digital presence, and the tools you learn transfer across industries. The trade-off is that platforms change their features every few months, so you never stop learning.

We have left out salary figures on purpose. Published numbers vary widely by city, company and source, and most are not dated or explained. Check current listings on job portals for your city and role instead.

What junior roles look like

 • SEO executive: keyword research, on-page fixes, Google Business Profile management, reporting from Search Console and GA4.
 • Performance marketing executive: building and monitoring Google and Meta campaigns, daily checks, weekly reports.
 • Social media executive: content calendars, posting, community replies, working with designers and video editors.
 • Content writer or content marketer: blogs, landing pages, emails and ad copy, often with an SEO brief.

At an agency, a junior typically handles several client accounts under a senior manager. In-house, you usually work on one brand and go deeper. Neither is better; agencies teach you faster, in-house roles teach you the business. You can see how our own team is set up on our about page.

How AI Tools Change the Job

AI tools now draft ad copy, suggest keywords, summarise reports and create first-draft images. Ad platforms automate much of the bidding and targeting that juniors used to do by hand. That removes some routine tasks from entry-level roles.

What it does not remove is judgement: deciding what to test, spotting when the data is wrong, knowing the customer and checking that an AI-written claim is true. Learn to use the tools well, and be ready to explain how you checked their output. Our overview of AI tools in digital marketing covers the ones we use day to day.

Common Mistakes Beginners Make

 • Paying for a course before trying the free ones. Do Skillshop and HubSpot first; you will know what you need after that.
 • Learning every channel at once. Pick one, get good, then add a second.
 • Never spending real money. Even ₹2,000 teaches more than a simulated campaign.
 • Skipping analytics. If you can't set up tracking, you can't prove anything you did worked.
 • Copying templates without understanding them. Interviewers ask "why", and templates don't answer that.

If you are a business owner reading this to learn enough to manage your own marketing, the same path applies, just with your business as the project. If you would rather have specialists handle it, our SEO team and paid media team work with businesses across India.
