SEO Checklist 2026: On-Page and Technical SEO, Step by Step
A practical on-page and technical SEO checklist for 2026, based on Google's own documentation, with how to check each item and what changed this year.

An SEO checklist is only useful if it separates what matters from what doesn't. Many of the checklists that circulate include 80 items, half of them folklore: exact keyword density, meta keywords, word counts. This one is built from Google Search Central documentation and from the problems we actually find when auditing Indian business websites.
It has three parts: technical (can Google find and render the page?), on-page (does the page clearly answer a search?), and the 2026 changes that make some older advice obsolete. Each item includes how to check it, most with free tools.
What Changed in 2026
- <strong>FAQ rich results are gone.</strong> Google stopped showing them on 7 May 2026. HowTo rich results ended in 2023. FAQ content can still help readers, but the markup no longer earns a special listing.
- <strong>No special optimisation for AI Overviews and AI Mode.</strong> Google's AI features guidance says a page just needs to be indexed and eligible for a snippet. Its May 2026 AI optimisation guide says no special files, markup or rewriting are needed.
- <strong>llms.txt does not affect Google.</strong> Google clarified in June 2026 that llms.txt files are not needed for Search and won't help or hurt rankings. Keep one if other AI tools use it, but don't expect SEO value from it.
- <strong>Spam policies now explicitly cover AI content at scale.</strong> Generating many pages "without adding value", with AI or otherwise, is scaled content abuse.
Technical SEO Checklist
Technical issues are the most expensive to ignore, because they can stop good pages from being found at all. Start here.
Core Web Vitals thresholds
Google's current thresholds for a "good" experience, measured on real users:
On Indian business sites the usual culprits are uncompressed hero images, too many third-party scripts (chat widgets, several tracking pixels, heavy sliders) and cheap shared hosting. Fixing images alone often moves LCP more than anything else. Test on a mid-range Android phone over mobile data, which is how most of your visitors arrive, not on the office Wi-Fi.
On-Page SEO Checklist
On-page SEO is about making each page the clearest, most useful answer to a specific search. Work through this for every important page: services, locations, products and key blog posts.
Content quality: the item that outweighs the rest
Google's guidance on helpful, people-first content asks whether a page offers original information, a substantial answer, and insight beyond the obvious. In practice, before publishing, ask: <em>what would the reader still need to search for after reading this?</em> If the answer is "most of it", the page is not ready, however well its tags are optimised.
This is also what gets content cited in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google calls it "non-commodity" content: specific prices, first-hand process details, local knowledge, and clear definitions that other pages don't have. Our GEO and AEO guide covers AI search visibility in more depth.
Checks That Are Mostly Myths
- <strong>Keyword density targets.</strong> Google does not use a percentage. Use the words naturally and cover the topic fully.
- <strong>Minimum word counts.</strong> A 600-word page that answers the question beats a 3,000-word page that pads it.
- <strong>Meta keywords tag.</strong> Google has ignored it for many years.
- <strong>Adding FAQ schema for rich results.</strong> They are no longer shown in Google Search.
- <strong>Special "AI SEO" files or markup.</strong> Google says none are needed for its AI features.
How Often to Run This Checklist
- <strong>Weekly (5 minutes):</strong> Search Console for new errors, manual actions or sudden drops.
- <strong>Monthly:</strong> Core Web Vitals report, broken links, newly published pages indexed.
- <strong>Quarterly:</strong> full on-page review of top pages, content freshness, internal links.
- <strong>Before and after any redesign or migration:</strong> the full technical list. See our guide to redesigning without losing rankings.
A checklist tells you what is wrong. Fixing it well, and choosing what to fix first, is where experience counts. Our SEO services start with exactly this audit. To find the right queries to target in the first place, read our keyword research guide.
