Types of SEO: Full Form, 10 Types and Which Come First

Types of SEO explained: the SEO full form, on-page, off-page, technical, local, AI search and more, plus a table of which types your business should do first.

The <strong>full form of SEO is Search Engine Optimization</strong>: the work of helping search engines understand your pages so the right people find them. Google's own SEO Starter Guide describes it as helping search engines understand your content and helping users decide whether to visit your site from search.

Most lists of the types of SEO stop at four, or pad the list to fourteen without telling you which ones matter. This guide explains the ten types that come up in real projects, the difference between white hat, black hat and grey hat SEO, and, most usefully, a table of which types to prioritise first for your kind of business. Each type gets a short explanation and a link to a deeper guide where we have one.

What Is SEO, in One Paragraph?

Search engines such as Google and Bing crawl the web, store pages in an index, and rank them for each search. SEO is everything you do to make your pages easy to crawl, clearly relevant to what people search, and trusted enough to rank above the alternatives. Unlike Google Ads, you don't pay per click, but results take time. Google itself says some changes show up in hours while others take several months.

The different "types" of SEO are simply different places where that work happens: on your pages, on your server, on other websites, on Google Maps, on YouTube, or inside AI answers.

The 10 Types of SEO at a Glance

The Four Core Types of SEO

Almost every SEO plan is built on these four. If you only have budget for part of the work, it goes here.

1. On-page SEO

On-page SEO is everything you control on the page itself: the title tag, the H1 and subheadings, the body copy, image alt text, internal links and the URL. The goal is that both a reader and Google can tell within seconds what the page is about and who it is for. A Kukatpally dental clinic with one "Services" page listing twelve treatments will usually rank worse than one with a separate, well-written page for implants, aligners and root canals.

2. Off-page SEO

Off-page SEO covers signals from outside your site, mainly links from other websites, plus brand mentions, reviews and PR coverage. A link from a respected Indian publication or industry body tells Google that someone independent vouches for you. Quality matters far more than volume: ten relevant links beat five hundred from directories nobody reads. Our guide to on-page vs off-page SEO compares the two in detail.

3. Technical SEO

Technical SEO makes sure search engines can crawl, render and index your site without problems. It covers site speed, Core Web Vitals (Google's measures of loading, responsiveness and visual stability), XML sitemaps, robots.txt, redirects, duplicate pages and structured data. You can write the best page in your industry, but if a stray "noindex" tag hides it, it will never rank. Read what technical SEO involves for the full checklist.

4. Local SEO

Local SEO helps you appear when people search with local intent, such as "physiotherapist near me" or "biryani in Gachibowli". The main levers are a complete Google Business Profile, steady genuine reviews, consistent name, address and phone number across listings, and location pages on your site. For a clinic, salon or restaurant, local SEO often brings more calls than the rest of the website combined. See our local SEO services guide for what the work includes.

Specialist SEO Types

These apply the core four to a particular kind of business, platform or search surface. Most businesses need one or two of them, not all six.

5. Content SEO

Content SEO means planning pages around the questions your buyers actually search, then writing answers better than the pages already ranking. It starts with keyword research and ends with guides, comparisons and FAQs that earn visits and links over time. For B2B companies, coaching institutes and financial advisers, content is usually where most organic leads come from.

6. E-commerce SEO

E-commerce SEO deals with problems content sites don't have: thousands of product pages, filters that create duplicate URLs, out-of-stock items and thin manufacturer descriptions. For most stores, category pages ("cotton kurtas for women") drive more search traffic than individual products. Our e-commerce SEO guide for India covers it step by step.

7. Mobile SEO

Google uses the mobile version of your site for indexing and ranking. So mobile SEO is less a separate type and more a lens on all the others: content that is hidden or missing on mobile effectively doesn't exist for Google. For most Indian sites we work on, phones bring the large majority of search visits, often on patchy connections, so page weight and tap-friendly layouts matter even more.

8. International and multilingual SEO

International SEO serves different countries or languages from one site. The key tool is hreflang, a tag that tells Google which page is for which language or region, for example <em>en-IN</em> for English in India or <em>hi-IN</em> for Hindi. Google's guide to localized versions explains the setup. For Indian brands, the multilingual side (Hindi, Telugu, Tamil pages) is often more valuable than targeting other countries.

9. Video and YouTube SEO

YouTube is a search engine in its own right, and Google often shows video results for "how to" searches. Video SEO covers titles, descriptions, chapters, thumbnails and transcripts, and on your own site, video pages that Google can index. It suits businesses that can show rather than tell: a Surat textile brand demonstrating fabric, or a CA explaining GST filing.

10. AI search optimisation (GEO and AEO)

GEO (generative engine optimisation) and AEO (answer engine optimisation) are the newest labels: getting your brand cited in Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity. Google says there are no special requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond normal SEO best practice, so treat anyone selling "AI files" or secret markup with suspicion. What does help is specific, first-hand content and a brand that other sites mention. Our GEO and AEO guide goes further.

White Hat vs Black Hat vs Grey Hat SEO

These terms describe how SEO is done, not where. They cut across all ten types above.

Google's spam policies list the practices it acts against, including link spam, cloaking, keyword stuffing, scaled content abuse and site reputation abuse. Sites that break them can rank lower, disappear from results or receive a manual action. Google doesn't recognise "grey": a tactic is either within the rules or it isn't, and grey hat usually means "not caught yet".

A warning sign when hiring an agency If a proposal promises "500 backlinks a month" or page-one rankings in 30 days, ask exactly where those links come from. In the sites we audit, a sudden spike of links from unrelated foreign blogs is one of the most common reasons a small business has lost rankings.

Which Types of SEO to Prioritise First, by Business Type

This is the question competitor lists skip. You can't do all ten types well at once, and you shouldn't try. Here is where we would start for common Indian business types, assuming the site has no major technical problems.

Two rules sit underneath this table. First, technical basics come before everything: if Google can't index your pages, no other type of SEO works. Second, match the type to how your customers search. People looking for a dentist use Maps; people choosing accounting software read comparisons and ask ChatGPT. Spend where your buyers already are.

Common Mistakes When Choosing SEO Types

  • <strong>Buying links before fixing the site.</strong> Off-page work can't rescue pages that are slow, thin or not indexed.
  • <strong>Treating local SEO as optional</strong> for a business that only serves one city. For many service businesses, the map results matter more than the blue links below them.
  • <strong>Publishing lots of blog posts with no plan.</strong> Ten pages answering real buyer questions beat a hundred generic ones.
  • <strong>Chasing AI search as a separate project.</strong> The foundations that help you rank in Google are the same ones that get you cited in AI answers.
  • <strong>Measuring rankings instead of enquiries.</strong> Track calls, forms and sales from organic search in GA4 and Search Console, not just positions.

If you would like help deciding which of these types your site needs, our SEO team starts every engagement with an audit and a prioritised plan rather than a fixed package.
