WhatsApp Channels for Business: Setup, Strategy and Limits

How to use WhatsApp Channels for your business: setup, what to post, how Channels differ from Communities, broadcast lists and the API, and when each makes sense.

A WhatsApp Channel is a one-way broadcast feed inside WhatsApp's Updates tab. You post text, photos, videos, polls and voice notes, and followers read and react but can't reply. For a business the appeal is obvious: it's free, there is no follower limit, and it lives in the app most Indians open dozens of times a day.

It also has limits that most "grow your WhatsApp Channel" posts skip. This guide covers how Channels work, how to set one up, what to post, and where a Channel beats (or loses to) Communities, broadcast lists and the paid WhatsApp Business API.

How WhatsApp Channels Work

WhatsApp introduced Channels in June 2023, and they reached India in September 2023. The key features for a business:

 • Privacy on both sides. Followers' phone numbers are hidden from you and from other followers, and your admin phone number is hidden from followers. People follow more readily when they don't have to hand over their number.
 • One-way with reactions. Followers can react with emoji and vote in polls, but can't reply or message the channel.
 • Formats: text, photos, videos, links, stickers, polls and voice updates.
 • Up to 16 admins, so a team can share posting.
 • Limited history. WhatsApp keeps channel updates for up to 30 days.
 • Forwarding controls. Admins can choose whether posts can be forwarded or screenshotted.
The limitation to plan around Channel posts don't arrive in the chat list like a message. Followers see them when they open the Updates tab, and only if they look. Reach per post is typically well below your follower count. That is the trade-off for it being free.

How to Create a WhatsApp Channel for Your Business

 • Open the WhatsApp Business app and go to the Updates tab.
 • Tap + (or the Channels section) and choose Create channel.
 • Add the channel name (usually your business name), a description saying what followers will get and how often, and your logo.
 • Create the channel, then open its settings to add admins and choose whether to allow forwarding.
 • Copy the channel link. You will share it everywhere below.

You can create a channel from the regular WhatsApp app too, but running it from the Business app keeps it tied to your business profile. A blue verification badge is available through a Meta Verified subscription.

Channels vs Communities vs Broadcast Lists vs API

The cost difference is real. Suppose you want to send eight updates a month to 5,000 people. As WhatsApp API marketing templates, at roughly ₹0.86 each, that is about 40,000 messages and around ₹34,000 a month before GST. As channel posts it costs nothing. However, API messages land in the chat list and get read, while channel posts wait in the Updates tab. That's why a Channel is best for regular content and the API for messages that must be seen. What to Post on a Business WhatsApp Channel

People follow a channel expecting something specific. The description should promise it and the posts should deliver it. Content that works well:

 • Post on a predictable rhythm, for example daily at 8 a.m. or every Monday and Thursday, and say so in the description.
 • Keep posts short and put the key point in the first line, since previews are truncated.
 • Use polls to learn what followers want. Votes are anonymous, which increases participation.
 • Always include a next step such as a "Chat with us" link (wa.me link to your business number), an order link, or a booking page, because followers can't reply to the channel itself.

How to Grow Channel Followers

 • Your existing customers first: share the link in your WhatsApp Status, order confirmations, receipts, and at the counter with a QR code.
 • Website and social: add a "Follow on WhatsApp" button to your site footer, Instagram bio link and email signature.
 • Give a reason: "Channel followers get the menu a day early" works better than "Follow our channel".
 • Promoted channels: WhatsApp announced paid channel promotion and Status ads in June 2025, and they have since been rolling out more widely. Check availability in your WhatsApp Business app, since features reach accounts at different times.

Measuring a Channel

Channel insights show reach and follower growth over the last 30 days. The number that matters for a business is what happens next: clicks on your links (use UTM-tagged links so they appear in GA4) and chats started from the wa.me link. If a channel grows followers but never drives a click or a chat, the content needs a clearer next step.

Common Mistakes

 • Treating it like a chat. Followers can't reply, so every post needs a link to where they can act.
 • Posting only offers. Pure promotion gets muted. Mix in useful content.
 • Going quiet. An abandoned channel looks worse than none.
 • Using it for urgent messages. Appointment reminders and delivery updates belong in the API, where they are actually seen.
