AI SEO Services: What to Buy, What to Skip (2026)
AI SEO services explained for Indian businesses: what is real, what is hype, the red flags, questions to ask an agency and how to measure results properly.
Published by Web Hippo in SEO
If you have asked three agencies for a quote on <strong>AI SEO services</strong> this year, you have probably been sold three different things. One wants to use AI tools to publish more blog posts. Another promises to get your brand "ranked in ChatGPT". A third says it will add special AI files and schema that make Google's AI Overviews pick you. Only some of this is worth paying for.
This guide is for the business owner or marketing head who has to decide. It separates the two meanings of AI SEO, shows what Google itself says you do and don't need, lists the red flags, and gives you a scorecard to compare proposals. For the hands-on tactics of getting cited, see our separate GEO and AEO playbook.
What "AI SEO Services" Actually Means
The phrase covers two different services that agencies often blend into one pitch. Knowing which one you are buying is the first filter.
Meaning 1: SEO work done faster with AI tools
Here, AI is the agency's toolkit. It uses large language models and AI features inside SEO software to cluster keywords, draft briefs, write first drafts of meta descriptions, spot technical issues in crawl data, or summarise competitor pages. Done well, this frees senior people to spend time on strategy and editing. Done badly, it produces a lot of thin pages very quickly.
You should care about the output, not the tooling. An agency using AI to cut a week of keyword grouping to an afternoon is a good thing if a human still checks the result and the savings show up in your fee or in extra work delivered.
Meaning 2: Getting your brand into AI answers
This is AI search optimization: improving the chance that your business is mentioned or cited when someone asks Google's AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Copilot a question. People also call it GEO (generative engine optimisation), AEO (answer engine optimisation), LLM SEO or SEO for ChatGPT. The labels differ; the work overlaps heavily with normal SEO.
What Google Says You Don't Need
Google published its guide to optimising for generative AI features in May 2026 and last updated it in July. It is the most useful single document to read before you talk to any agency, because it answers most of the claims you will hear in sales calls.
- <strong>No special files or markup.</strong> Google says you don't need new machine-readable files, AI text files, markup or Markdown versions of pages to appear in Search, and that such files neither help nor harm your visibility. There is also no special schema.org markup for AI features.
- <strong>No chunking.</strong> You don't need to break pages into small pieces. Google says its systems can understand multiple topics on one page and show the relevant part.
- <strong>No rewriting for AI.</strong> You don't need to write in a particular way for generative AI search, because the systems understand synonyms and general meaning.
- <strong>What it does recommend:</strong> foundational SEO, a clear technical structure, accurate local and product details, and "non-commodity" content, meaning a unique point of view and expert or first-hand takes that go beyond common knowledge.
Be wary of third-party tools that promise ranking success or claim to use "internal" Google metrics. No third-party tool has access to our internal ranking or AI systems. Google Search Central, AI optimization guide
That guide covers Google only. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot run their own systems, and each depends on its own crawler being allowed to read your site. In practice the same things help across all of them: pages that are crawlable, specific and useful, and a brand that other credible sites talk about.
AI SEO: Real vs Hype
Here is how we sort the common promises in AI SEO proposals. The last column is the question that exposes whether the agency understands the difference.
What a Good AI SEO Service Should Deliver
A credible AI SEO agency should be able to show you a plan in which most of the effort goes to work that would pay off even if AI search disappeared tomorrow. In our view, that means:
- <strong>A technical and content audit</strong> of your current site, covering indexing, crawler access (including whether you block AI crawlers by accident) and thin or duplicate pages. Our SEO audit guide shows what a proper one covers.
- <strong>A prompt and query map</strong>: the questions your buyers actually ask, in the words they use, grouped by stage. A Kukatpally dental clinic's list would include "is root canal painful", "best dentist near KPHB for kids" and "clear aligners cost Hyderabad".
- <strong>Content with something new in it</strong>: prices, processes, case data, expert opinions and photos from your own business, not rewrites of the top five results.
- <strong>Entity and profile consistency</strong>: the same name, address, services and facts on your site, Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles, so AI systems don't pick up conflicting details.
- <strong>Earned mentions</strong>: reviews, industry publications, podcasts and credible listings. These are slow and hard to fake, which is why they matter.
- <strong>Honest reporting</strong> that separates AI visibility from traffic and traffic from leads.
Red Flags When Hiring an AI SEO Agency
- <strong>Guaranteed AI citations or rankings.</strong> Google's guide says meeting every requirement still doesn't mean it will crawl, index or show a page. ChatGPT and Perplexity make no promises either.
- <strong>llms.txt sold as the fix.</strong> If a proposal leads with llms.txt, "AI schema" or Markdown copies of your pages, the agency is selling what Google has said it doesn't use.
- <strong>Volume as the headline.</strong> "500 AI blogs" is a warning, not a feature. Google's scaled content abuse policy names "using generative AI tools or other similar tools to generate many pages without adding value for users" as an example of spam.
- <strong>Claims of special access.</strong> Any tool or agency that says it uses internal Google data is contradicting Google directly.
- <strong>Vanity metrics only.</strong> A report showing a rising "AI visibility score" with no link to impressions in Search Console, referral traffic or enquiries.
- <strong>A separate AI budget with the same work inside.</strong> If the "AI SEO" package is your old SEO package with new labels and a higher fee, ask what is actually different.
Questions to Ask Before You Sign
- Which of your deliverables would still be worth doing if AI Overviews and ChatGPT did not exist?
- How do you use AI in your own work, and who reviews it before it goes live?
- Which prompts or queries will you track for us, and can we add our own?
- Which tools do you use to track brand mentions in AI answers, and how do you handle the fact that answers vary between runs?
- How will your reports connect AI visibility to Search Console data, website traffic and leads?
- What did you find when you looked at our site and our competitors in AI answers before this meeting?
- Who owns the content, accounts and tracking setup if we stop working together?
The general agency questions still apply too: contract length, who works on your account and how often you meet. Our guide to choosing a digital marketing agency covers those.
How to Measure AI SEO Results
AI visibility is harder to measure than rankings, but it is no longer a black box. Ask for a report that combines official data with tracking, in this order of trust.
1. Google Search Console
Search Console now has a Generative AI performance report for Search, rolled out worldwide on 31 August 2026. It shows how many times links to your site appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode, grouped by page, country, device and date. It counts impressions only, not clicks, and sites need enough impressions before data appears. Your normal Performance report still shows overall clicks and queries.
2. Bing Webmaster Tools
Microsoft added an AI Performance report in February 2026. It shows how often your pages are cited as sources in Copilot and Bing's AI summaries, which URLs are cited and the grounding queries (the searches the AI ran to find your content). It is free, so there is no reason for an agency not to set it up.
3. Prompt tracking for ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini
For assistants without a publisher dashboard, agencies run a fixed set of prompts on a schedule and record whether your brand is mentioned, cited or recommended, and how often competitors appear. This is useful for spotting trends, but answers vary from run to run and by location, so treat a single month's number as a sample, not a ranking.
4. Traffic and leads
In GA4, visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com show up as referrals. Track them through to form fills, calls and WhatsApp enquiries. Our GA4 attribution guide explains the setup. For many Indian businesses the most honest signal is simpler: ask new customers how they found you and add "ChatGPT or another AI tool" as an option.
An AI SEO Agency Scorecard
Score each proposal from 0 to 2 on the eight points below: 0 if it is missing, 1 if it is vague, 2 if it is specific and evidenced. Anything under 10 out of 16 is, in our view, not ready for your money. A single 0 on the first row should end the conversation.
<strong>Example (illustrative):</strong> say a Pune D2C skincare brand compares two proposals. Agency A promises "guaranteed ChatGPT presence", 150 AI articles a month and an llms.txt setup, with a dashboard showing a proprietary visibility score. It scores 0 on guarantees, 0 on human review and 1 on measurement: 4 out of 16 at best.
Agency B audits the brand's product pages, plans ingredient explainers written with the in-house formulator, pitches beauty publications and sets up both webmaster tools. It lands around 13. B is the better buy even if it costs more per month, because A's volume carries spam-policy risk.
Do You Need a Separate AI SEO Service?
For most Indian small and mid-sized businesses, no. You need good SEO from an agency that understands AI search, reports on it and doesn't waste your budget on hacks. Pay a premium only for work that is genuinely extra, such as original research, digital PR or a large prompt-tracking programme. Our digital marketing cost guide has typical SEO retainer ranges to compare quotes against.
Larger brands in competitive categories, such as finance, education or healthcare, get more from dedicated AI visibility tracking, because buyers in those categories increasingly ask assistants for shortlists. Even there, the work underneath is the same: be the most specific, trusted source in your niche. That is the approach our SEO team takes with clients.
